 We moved to this house after living in Australia for 7 years.  We are both designers and fans of mid-century modern design.  When we saw this house, we both agreed it was our dream home and were lucky enough to be able to purchase it and live in it for 9 years. The house was built in 1963.  What attracted us was the sunken living room, fireplace, floor to ceiling windows, natural light, vaulted ceilings with exposed beams, big master bedroom with it’s lovely view, quiet neighborhood and being surrounded by trees. We always felt like we were living in a treehouse.

 As we went through lockdown due to COVID-19 we realized how we could not have asked for a nicer place to spend our days.  Sitting out on the front deck, waving to neighbors as they walked by, the serenity and quiet surroundings were such a pleasure. Even when you are inside, you have a connection to the outdoors.  Even in the winter, it is a joy to be in the living room with a crackling fire.

 This house is also perfect for entertaining.  My husband built the BBQ himself and we had many gatherings in the backyard.  We built what we call the “third floor” soon after we moved in when we saw the view from up there.  We also enjoy camping and sitting up there with friends around the firepit was some of the best of times.  In the backyard you will get many visitors including deer, squirrels and turkeys.

My husband is responsible for the landscape design.  We wanted beauty, simplicity and low maintenance which was achieved with grasses and drought resistant plants.  The backyard features up-lighting on the big oak tree, apple tree, stairs and flowerbed which makes the backyard beautiful at night as well as during the day. This year we installed the hardwood floors and new carpet. The house is freshly painted.

 We both worked in San Francisco for many years, my husband for the entire time we lived here. It is a 10-minute drive to Rockridge BART, and a 25-minute BART ride into the city.  The village of Montclair is a 30-minute walk away, quaint and friendly. For more restaurants, Piedmont and of course Rockridge are 10 minutes away.

 We also enjoy hiking and there are so many regional parks above us off Skyline Blvd.  Again, it is a 10-minute drive to one of our favorites, Redwood Regional Park where you can always park and go for a hike in the redwoods.

 We decided to move back to Australia but will miss this house and neighborhood so much and feel grateful that we were able to experience what we feel was the Northern California mid-century modern dream.  I am so happy for you to be able to experience it as well.

Tucked away in the wooded hills and winding streets above Oakland, Montclair is a small community with an appealing central shopping district. Sizable custom homes, along with a mix of Mediterranean, Craftsman, and contemporary-style homes are situated on forested lots, offering an elegant retreat from the city. The Montclair Business District is a throwback to a simpler time before strip malls, megamalls, and big-box stores. Residents can find everything they need, from dry cleaning and groceries to restaurants. Local restaurant favorites include the Montclair Egg Shop, Flipper’s Gourmet Burgers, and Crogan’s Montclair Restaurant. Gourmet specialty items are available at Le Bonbon, and Farmstead Wine and Cheese. A farmers market on Sundays provides fresh local produce and baked goods.
